We want Skyfire in the UK
Skyfire is a brand new browser for mobile phones that has launched in the US and by the looks of the initial demos it’s revolutionary and even gives the iPhone a run for it’s money. Full page browsing in that “viewport” style that the iPhone, Opera Mini client uses but full JavaScript support and flash. That means flash which means YouTube works flawlessly as does other...

Cellspin.net allows easy blogging from your phone
Cellspin.net is a really cool service that allows you to upload video, photos, text or sound to popular blog sites like Blogger, Facebook etc. I’m running it on a TYTN II and as you can see from the post below this one it works! www.cellspin.net

Hard drive upgrade time again but not for me
My Wifes notebook is very low on space and so I’ll be cloning it from a 100mb SATA to a 250mb SATA later today. I usually use Acronis for this and will again as it’s easy, fast and just works. It’ll take around 2 hours to do the cloning and then it’s just a case of putting everything back together. As her machine is running XP it should be straight forward. (if...

Better up-time than Google?
I joined Mon.itor.us recently, a free service to help monitor web sites. It’s pretty cool and easy to set-up. Had a weekly report yesterday which showed some of ours sites (testing a handful) and compared them to Googles and the result was interesting. www.bouncingfish.com was up for 100% www.google.com was up for 99.3% Only issue so far is I’m trying to work out how to make it test...

3G on an iPhone and iPod Touch
This is a great article that will show you how to get Internet/E-mail over 3G on an iPod Touch or iPhone. http://www.pyrofersprojects.com/3gipod/3gipod.html Basically you setup your Windows Mobile as a Wireless router and connect your iPod Touch / iPhone to 3G via your phones data connection. Worked flawlessly on my TYTN II and iPod Touch and managed to get 282kb/s per second download using...

Can't register a domain after using netsol whois
Network solutions recently introduced a sneaky little feature that will surely stop people using them for quick domain lookups. Basically they “hold” any domain you look for that is available for a few days which means you have to use them to buy it OR wait for it to be released. Sneaky!

Currently Watching...
Just finished watching Season 3 of Arrested Development - that show was so good and shame they didn’t want to do more but can appreciate it getting stale over time. We’re now into Prison Break - heard it was good and looking forward to getting more into it. Still haven’t seen Heroes season 2 - not sure it will work after Season 1 was so good but let’s hope. Looking forward...

5 new apps for iPod touch, sucker!
OK so I’m a walkover and paid the $20 to get the new apps (paid through my US account to save on the 12 quid the UK store wanted). Interestingly there was no major download or activity activate them after installing 1.1.3 firmware (which deactivated my jailbroken 1.1.1 of course). This means (and it makes sense) that the 1.1.3 firmware update contained all 5 applications in full and all that...

wmplayer.exe high cpu in Vista
I think I *may* have found the solution to a recent problem I’ve had in Vista where wmplayer stars inexplicably taking up 50% or more of my CPU when it’s not even being used. I have media center turned off (disabled services) and don’t use Wmplayer (I tend to use media player classic standalone exe instead) So what’s the deal and what’s changed to cause this. Well...

Time Capsule
Another item I forgot about was the new “Time Capsule” from Apple announced yesterday. This is an Airport station with a 500gb or 1TB hard disk and designed to allow easy Wi-Fi backups from your notebook primarily. I still think that on-line backup solutions like Iron Mountain or Mozy (my choice for now) are the way forward. Established companies with proper infrastructure, protected,...

Superfetch: on or off?
Superfetch, Readyboost and Readydrive - three buzz words in Vista that are all to do with improving performance but do they? There’s plenty of articles online that have run tests on Readyboost and some have said it makes a difference, some haven’t. So what are they? Superfetch is a new technology in Vista that basically works out your usage patterns and “preloads” your...

PointUI, based Windows Mobile UI replacement yet
PointUI is a brand new attempt to re-skin the Windows Mobile interface into something cooler and it’s by far the best one I’ve come across yet. This is just a quick mention before I do a more indepth item on this but if you use Windows Mobile 5/6 then give this a shot. It’s free, and creates a new slick home page with sliding animations AND goes some way to reskinning...

Bluetooth enable your Mac Mini with a Vaio...
Whilst clearing out some stuff today I found a bluetooth USB stick I had that I used to use on some old non-BT laptops. it’s a Sony Vaio stick and doesn’t need any drivers on XP and Vista. My Macbook Pro and iMac both have BT by default (and both Intel based) but my old Mac Mini (powerPC) doesn’t so I just wondered what would happen if I tried it. keyboard and mouse easily (once...
