Fixing missing items in iTunes
If you are like me then you have your iTunes library on an external drive and from time to time this can cause problems when you’re running other external drives OR have re-configured your hard disk as your drive letter can change and this means iTunes can’t find your music. There is probably a more permanent way around this via some file hacking or 3rd party tool but since I only sync...

Automatically blocking IPs with the Windows FTP...
I’ve been noticing the standard event log entries showing mass attempts to FTP into some of our servers and so was looking around the web for something that could manage this for me. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything but did find some C# code that could read FTP log files and add IPs to the IIS meta database. So, a quick copy/paste and conversion to VB.NET and I had a console app up...

Back from Skiing and everyone intact and well
We got back from our annual ski trip yesterday and it seemed to go very smoothly compared to previous years. We had a slight check-in issue with the Easyjet rep who insisted on checking us all in together (they’ve never done this before) and didn’t understand/read his own screen. We also had one person with a valid visa that seemed to require multiple phone calls to authorise. After...

iPhone? I'm waiting for generation 2 or 3
We bought new phones this year, the TYTN II which I’ve already done a mini review of. It’s a great phone in terms of blending a phone with a PDA with push e-mail etc. It works as well as most Microsoft phones ;) and it has a lot that beats the iPhone hands-down:- 1. The TYTN II has 3G/HSPDA option and built-in GPS. 2. You can download, install and develop apps (legally) for Windows...

Creating datalayers in .NET
I’ve been looking around the past few days for a tool to generate stored procedures and .NET datalayers that are adaptable and easy to implement and unfortunately I haven’t had much luck. There are applications like CodeSmith, MyGeneration etc and if you’re up for the learning curve nHibernate but these tools tend to add extra layers of complexity to a project and dont’...

Shock: More CDs with personal information go...
The London Metro today in-between its news items that come straight from Digg.com posted another scaremongering story about more CDs going missing in the post containing personal information. This comes straight after a recent story where the Inland Revenue “lost” some disks containing a few million peoples personal details. It’s no surprise some more disks have gone missing....

Vista SP1 RC1 is here
Finally it’s here - the new Vista Service Pack was released via MSDN and Microsoft Connect over the weekend. I had tried installing it on my current build but was getting very unhelpful Windows update errors. These seem to be related to the User Profiles issues I had been having (see previous posts on that) So, I decided to backup my files from the last month and re-clone by old drive from a...

New Sony Vaio 19.5v power adapter
The new Vaio SZ6 sports a new power adapter model VGP-AC19V26 which differs from the old V12 in that it’s much smaller and more portable. This new version makes it much easier to carry around a spare adapter if you’re caught short between charges.
